FRESNO, Calif. — A Day of Remembrance dinner was held on Sunday, Feb. 17 to observe the 66th anniversary of the Feb. 19, 1942 signing of Executive Order 9066. It was also in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. By TAKESHI NAKAYAMA LOS ANGELES — The Day of Remembrance observance, held Feb. 16 at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM), celebrated the 20th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 that awarded reparations to Nikkei imprisoned in American concentration camps during World War II. The program also informed the nearly 300 audience members that there is still unfinished business: the campaign to gain equitable reparations for Japanese Latin Americans taken from their homelands during the war and imprisoned in the United States. Asahi Shimbun Japan and the U.S. military agreed Feb. 22 on a set of countermeasures aimed at preventing crimes by U.S. personnel in Japan, including providing information on troop levels to local governments, officials said. U.S. Forces Japan will be obliged to report the overall number of personnel, as well as those who live off-base, every year to local authorities through the Japanese government.

Applications for the 2008 Nikkei Community Internship (NCI) program are now available for prospective interns and organizations, announced the program's sponsor, the California Japanese American Community Leadership Council (CJACLC). The NCI program is now in its seventh year, with 77 interns and 15-plus Japanese American community groups in Los Angeles and the Bay Area having participated thus far.
